Electra is a guide dog puppy in training from Southeastern Guide Dogs in Palmetto, Florida. She is a yellow Labrador Retriever born December 20, 2013 at the SEGDI school in Florida. Her Dad is Bentley and her Mom is Barton. She is sponsored by Classic BMW in Plano, Tx and named in honor of their new electric car, the i3. On March 2, 2014 Electra flew to Texas to live with her volunteer puppy raiser family for about one year. After that time, she will return to SEGDI for her training to become a working guide dog for a blind person.
When she is ready for that next step, the blind person will come to the school to train with her for about 3 weeks and then she will go home with her new person. The guide dogs are provided to the blind person at no charge.
While she is in Texas, it is the job of the puppy raiser to socialize her and teach her good manners – in the house and out in public. She therefore, goes most everywhere that her new family goes.
The life of a guide dog in training is one of transitions. They must be able to bond with their puppy raisers, then transition to a bond with their trainer when they return to SEGDI, then bond yet again with their blind person. Not all dogs are capable of making these transitions. Only about 50% of dogs that return to the school actually become working guide dogs. The ones that do are extraordinary dogs.
